Factors to consider before breast implant surgery

Like any surgical procedure there several issues to consider prior to making the decision to go ahead. These factors need to be analyzed individually by each patient. Each patient needs to determine the pros and cons of the intervention for himself. The cosmetic surgery clinic should be consulted for questions but the final decision should rest with the person.

Some factors to consider are:

  1. Repeat surgeries—the patient should be aware that once she has undergone breast implant surgery, she would need to undergo many more of such surgeries in her lifetime to replace the first one or to make adjustments. Breast implants do not last forever. Most of them have a lifespan of 5-8 years.
  2. Permanent changes—the patient should know that the changes done through breast implant surgery are permanent. In other words, if she chooses to remove the implant at a later stage, the breasts will not appear the same as they did before surgery. Dimples, wrinkles and other effects may remain forever.
  3. Revision surgeries carry more risk—when the person will be undergoing surgery for replacement of the implants, there will be greater ris k of developing complications.
  4. Mammography and cancer detection is more difficult with breast implants.
  5. No breastfeeding is possible with implants as the ability to produce milk is vastly reduced or even eliminated.
  6. Cost—finance is an important question for many of us. Breast augmentation does not come cheap; most surgeries come within the range of $3500 and $12000, depending on location, type of implant, complexity of the case and type of incision. This cost includes anesthesia, operating room facility, hospital stay and other annex expenses. Many plastic surgery practices now offer patient financing (e.g. 0% interest in the first with 4 years to pay off). This may be a consideration in choosing the right practitioner for you, although qua lifications and experience take precedence over cost considerations.
  7. Recovery time—as breast surgery is a relatively heavy intervention (depending on length and anesthesia used), recovery may take 1 to 9 weeks. The patient should be aware that during the recovery period, she should not undertake strenuous effort such as exercising and arduous housework. Patients should be prepared to stop their normal activities during this period. This may include professional activities, depending on its nature and the advice of the surgeon.

Additional factors to be considered are relative to the type of implants chosen (silicone or saline). For silicone implants, the patient should be aware that when silicone implants rupture, there is no outward sign of it. Thus, periodic MRIs have to be carried out (usually every two years) to determine whether the implant is intact. MRIs are costly and may even exceed the cost of the initial surgery over the lifetime of the person. For saline implants, the patient should know of the possibility of having adjustable implants. These enable the surgeon to change the volume of the implant post-operatively, thereby better conforming to the patient’s wishes.
